Diving in the Maldive
Alex Van somethig ( or rather, somewhere ) was our dive guide, a Dutchman trained in architecture but got bored with building identical buildings due to strict government regulations.
He's been drifting about in SE Asia for a few years, much to the chagrain of his father, who's some big shot in the building business in Holland.
Maldives is a good place to sight the Manta Rays, the trick is to lie low at the bottom of the sea at specific spots and just wait for them to appear, magnificient creatures appearing seemingly from nowhere and zooming over one's head like some flying saucers from outer space , some big as a bed sheet. This was the first time I ever saw a Manta Ray and it was love at first sight.
Poor Alex could only direct us to the spot but couldn't actually go in himself due to an ear infection.
White men don't seem to do too well in the tropics 'cos he also developed a non- specific dermatitis which fortunately cleared up with a cream I gave him.
