The Great Wall

I visited Beijing for the first time in the 1980's just as China was opening up. My impression then was the East might be red, China's still in darkness .

The tree, barren of leaves, flowers or fruit, signifies the lack of visible achievement after 40 years of Communist Rule .

The great wall signifies the burden of 5000 years of tradition and culture, sits heavily on the shoulders of all Chinese like a traditional Chinese tomb .

Of course China is much changed now, alas not all for the better !

The painting was published in the Breakthrough Magazine in 1990
